Akamai hosts: probably not highly relevant
- Akamai has money they can spend on assuring host security
- they have much greater network-monitoring capabilities than MIT
- higher risk due to frequent intruder scans of MIT's network?
- seems very unlikely that Akamai hosts "trust" any MIT hosts
- also seems unlikely that Akamai hosts "trust" other Akamai hosts
- current practice: Akamai hosts included in any relevant MIT scans
- we send them some vulnerability research via informal channels
- if there were a breakin, we could shut off their router port
- Akamai FreeFlow service is supposed to handle that situation
- more relevant spinoff-company issue: abandoned machines
- faculty/students in company don't visit campus often
- they no longer spend time maintaining on-campus machines
- holes go unpatched and intruders take over abandoned machines
- this occurs in a number of labs; it's not an Akamai issue
