Akamai hosts: probably not highly relevant

• Akamai has money they can spend on assuring host security
• they have much greater network-monitoring capabilities than MIT
• higher risk due to frequent intruder scans of MIT's network?
• seems very unlikely that Akamai hosts "trust" any MIT hosts
• also seems unlikely that Akamai hosts "trust" other Akamai hosts

• current practice: Akamai hosts included in any relevant MIT scans
• we send them some vulnerability research via informal channels
• if there were a breakin, we could shut off their router port
• Akamai FreeFlow service is supposed to handle that situation

• more relevant spinoff-company issue: abandoned machines
• faculty/students in company don't visit campus often
• they no longer spend time maintaining on-campus machines
• holes go unpatched and intruders take over abandoned machines
• this occurs in a number of labs; it's not an Akamai issue
